Reality Gaming Group which has partnered with Team17 for this endeavour uses its own Ethereum side chain for minting NFTs, which allows it to significantly reduce the energy used for the process. The company has categorically highlighted its ‘low energy’ costs, stressing that the energy used for minting 100,000 MetaWorm NFTs can be equated to the average annual energy consumption of kettles in 11 UK households.
A portion from the NFT sale will be donated to Coin4Planet, a company focused on creating easy-to-use environment-friendly initiatives for businesses. Team17 intends to specifically donate the proceeds to Coin4Planet’s ReFeed Farms initiative which uses worms for farming, instead of synthetic fertilisers.
Harley Homewood, Business Development Director at Team17 said, “Worms remains an iconic franchise in global gaming with tens of millions of fans around the world, so we're really excited and proud to announce our partnership with Reality Gaming Group ahead of the release of highly limited-edition artwork NFTs later this year.”
Allaying energy-related concerns, he further stated, “The ultra-low energy technology Reality Gaming Group uses, together with their carbon neutral servers, played an essential part of the reassurances we sought before our agreement; we’re very much looking forward to giving Worms fans a chance to own a piece of our history.”
Upon receiving plenty of negative social media feedback post the announcement, many were keen to know if Team17 will still go ahead with the Worms NFTs. Issuing a new statement in this regard, Team17 clarified that it intends to launch only the NFT collectibles, and the release shouldn’t be perceived as a step towards introducing NFTs or P2E (Play-to-Earn) NFT mechanics in any of the Indie games published by them.
A Team17 spokesperson stressed that they’re licensing the Worms brand purely for the production of digital artwork based on one of the most popular IPs in the Indie games genre, just like they normally do in case of physical merchandise.
